Thousands flock to Goenka retreats yearly, drawn by promises of inner peace and self-discovery. Yet, as the podcast uncovers, some attendees grapple with profound psychological turmoil, shedding light on the complexities of spiritual practices in modern society.

Migration is not a problem to be solved; it is a powerful force driving sustainable development for migrants and their communities. In recent decades, migration has evolved dramatically, spurred by diverse economic, political, social, and environmental factors that prompt people to relocate from their homes. Whether driven by the pursuit of better economic or educational opportunities, family reunification, or a response to climate change and disasters, migration has become a prevalent social phenomenon, reshaping societies worldwide.
It's important to understand that migration encompasses various forms, ranging from refugees forced to flee their homelands to economic migrants who voluntarily seek opportunities elsewhere. According to the International Monetary Fund (IMF), migrants constitute over 3 per cent of the global population, signifying the magnitude of this global phenomenon.
While some migrations occur through regular channels and legal means, others occur irregularly, where individuals enter, stay, or work in a country without proper authorization or documentation. Addressing the challenges posed by migration requires a nuanced approach that acknowledges both its positive and negative aspects.
One key benefit of migration is its potential to boost the labour force, stimulate investment, and fuel economic growth. For instance, preliminary calculations by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) indicate a modest positive impact on growth from migrants in European Union (EU) countries. Moreover, migration can help alleviate the strains of ageing populations in advanced economies, solving long-term demographic challenges.
However, realizing these benefits necessitates effectively integrating newcomers into host societies. While this process may entail initial hardships and logistical, fiscal, or political challenges, the long-term gains outweigh the short-term obstacles. Successful integration requires concerted global efforts, including cooperation among affected countries, fair burden-sharing, labour rights protection, and safe and secure migrant environments.
Nonetheless, migration that is not safe, orderly, and regular poses grave risks, leading to tragedies such as migrant deaths along dangerous migration routes and the proliferation of human trafficking and migrant smuggling. To address these issues, global policy efforts must prioritize enhanced cooperation, dialogue, and coordination among nations.
By fostering safe, orderly, and regular migration, the international community can unlock migration's full potential as a driver of sustainable development. While challenges persist, with proactive measures and collaborative approaches, migration can be transformed into a source of growth and prosperity for migrants and their host communities. The road ahead may be daunting, but the rewards of effective migration management are boundless.
